Costs of Commercial Diving School: All the Nitty Gritty Details

As a commercial diver, you must obtain the proper certification to be able to work in the most intense underwater conditions. With the many dive schools that are now available across the globe, pricing out the different training options can get overwhelming. Most training programs include variations of preparation for underwater construction jobs and wet welding. Although each dive school and specific program can vary in price, the typical initial cost of Commercial Diving School is usually around $25,000 to complete a several month training program. Before committing to any accredited program, it’s important to understand the details that go into the price of the diving school. That’s why we broke down our commercial diving training program and its prices to better communicate what an IDI student can expect.

REGISTRATION
Completing the registration process is the first step to inquiring your interest as a potential diving student. Registration fees for Commercial Diving School are typically universal for most training programs, costing about $100 to enroll. In order to enroll in the Air/Mixed Gas Surface-Supplied Diver program at IDI, the registration form can be completed on the IDI website or by calling the admissions office at (843) 740-1124.

COMMERCIAL DIVING PHYSICAL
Before starting underwater welding training, a recent dive physical is required.  Because commercial divers work in rough underwater conditions, it’s necessary to measure the body’s physical capabilities by taking a variety of tests and laboratory exams. IDI offers a full diving physical priced at $650 for all students who wish to enroll. The physical includes the essential examinations needed to measure the commercial diving candidates’ health and fitness.

EXTRA MATERIAL
Each commercial diving student is required to have a number of important equipment and material during the training program. After purchasing the required textbooks and fundamental diving gear, extra material ends up costing around $31,000. A commercial diving student can expect to purchase include steel toe boots, dry suit, undergarments, gloves, safety harnesses, masks, snorkels, fins, and more. There are often several package deals where these essentials can be purchased at nearby dive shops.

HOUSING
Another expense to take into consideration is the cost of short-term housing. Although there are housing options available through craigslist and other rental listings, IDI offers affordable 2-bedroom apartments and larger, multiple room units. These short-term living options are available to rent for the four months that it takes to complete the Commercial Diving Program. When choosing the housing that is associated with IDI, the estimated cost is expected to be about $2,000.

TUITION
A commercial diving student is expected to complete 640 hours of training and education. The diving program at IDI entails a detailed schedule that will fully prepare the student for their future career as an underwater construction worker with a tuition fee of $20,500.

After all is said and done, the typical commercial diving student can expect to spend $26,350 after all the “nitty gritty details” are applied. This price, however, is substantially lower compared to most commercial diving schools that are nearing $30,000. It is also important to keep in mind that Financial Aid, including grants and loans through FSA, is available for IDI’s Air/Mixed Gas Surface Supplied Diving program.
